On 27-28 March President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Mr. Hassan Rouhani paid official visit to Russia. What are the results of top-level negotiations conducted in Moscow? What values did this visit pursue?
This is the ninth meeting of the presidents of two countries since Mr. Hassan Rouhani was elected president in 2013. But it is worth emphasizing that this meeting is distinguished from all previous ones which were not dignified with such conspicuously comprehensive agenda.
Mr. Hassan Rouhani scheduled his visit to Moscow for March, having less than two months before intended running for president in the next presidential election. Consequently, he attributed considerable importance to this politically expedient meeting with the Russian leader, which will substantially contribute to his pre-election rating.
Russia on its part also considered this summit to be a fundamentally relevant milestone both in political and diplomatic contexts, given the fact that Iran is a prominent regional participant in the Middle East.
For the time being Russia is afforded with the opportunity to successfully operate on the Iranian national market and represent the country’s business interests. During the official meeting, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Mr. Hassan Rouhani signed 16 joint documents on cooperation in diverse areas of business activity such as: nuclear power engineering, gas sector, geological exploration, railway transport, communications and information technologies, construction and housing and public utilities, electric power trade, jurisprudence, travel industry and sport activities.
This visit will definitely consolidate and facilitate further development of Russian-Iranian business relations.
